What is the epiretinal membrane?

The macular epiretinal membrane consists on the growth of tissue over the macular area, which may cause loss of vision and image deformation.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms are loss of vision, blurry vision or image deformation. Lines appear to be deformed and numbers or letters can jump out of line.

Which is the treatment?

In its initial stage, membrane monitoring and check-ups are recommended, normally through a test called optical coherence tomography (OCT).  If there is a significant loss of vision or if the distortion perception of objects increases considerably, a vitrectomy is recommended.
