What is a macular hole?

This is a small tear in the macula, the part of the eye in charge of central and detailed vision. The macula is a very small area located inside of the retina (the thin light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye).

What are the symptoms?

Patients notice a major decrease in visual acuity in a short period of time, mainly in their central vision, as well as distortion of images in one of their eyes. A grey area can be seen in the central vision. Straight lines can look wavy.

Which is the treatment?

Macular hole is treated with surgery, specifically with a vitrectomy.
